Description:

This program provides an in-depth look at the California Coastal Commission’s purpose, history, and role in protecting California’s iconic coastal resources. Attendees will gain practical insights into navigating the Coastal Commission’s review process, understanding when Commission oversight applies, and learning how the Commission collaborates with cities, homeowners, and architects to ensure compliance with coastal development policies. Special attention will be given to the impact of Executive Orders, including the current exemption of Commission review for fire rebuilds, and how these provisions may influence rebuilding and development scenarios.

Learning objectives:

• Understand the California Coastal Commission’s mission, history and impact, and how its efforts protect the California coastline environment.
• Participants will learn about the resources and support provided by the California Coastal Commission to Architects and homeowners to design and execute projects that meet regulatory requirements and prioritize public access, safety and environmental sustainability.
• Evaluate how and when California Coastal Commission review is required for development of projects, including the jurisdictional overlap with local governments and the implications for community access, safety and environmental preservation.
• Participants will understand the current policies exempting fire rebuilds from California Coastal Commission review, including their implications, limitations, and the Commission’s role in approving modifications to rebuilding plans.
