Description:
This course provides an overview of Steel Windows & Doors in residential architecture. It will define the history of how steel windows in buildings originated in medieval times from Blacksmiths for churches and the very wealthy who could afford them. It will delve into the alloy material make-up of steel and the welding process of assembly, the glazing process for steel windows and the various methods of coating or finishing the steel to protect from elements and corrosion. This class will assist the residential specifier to identify different performance characteristics of different steel windows defining how hot rolled and cold rolled steel differ as well as thermally broken steel product from non-thermally broken product. Various window and door operation (venting capabilities) and associative hardware will be reviewed as well as U.S. window “life safety” and code requirements. The class will conclude reviewing various installation details of steel windows and doors in common wall conditions for typical residential architecture.
