Located on a corner lot\, this project creatively explores the relationship between site conditions and architectural expression\, with playful nods to the concept of “bending” through the use of half arches and curved forms inside and out. \n\n\n\nDesigned to clearly delineate between new construction and remodeled spaces through materiality and color\, this project showcases a thoughtful integration of architecture\, interior design\, and landscape collaboration. Attendees will hear from the design team about the project’s conception\, design challenges\, and the potential of ADUs to improve housing accessibility and sustainability in the South Bay. Whether you’re designing for added square footage\, potential rental income\, or multi-generational living\, this program will provide practical strategies and inspiration for incorporating ADUs into residential design. \n\n\n\nLearning objectives:\n\n\n\n\nExplore how site characteristics—such as a corner lot—influence design choices that enhance livability\, access to daylight\, and neighborhood engagement.\n\n\n\nDescribe the planning\, design\, and construction phases involved in integrating an ADU with an existing home\, including key code considerations\, spatial planning\, and coordination with city requirements.\n\n\n\nExamine strategies for clearly delineating new construction from remodeled spaces to support intuitive wayfinding\, functional layout\, and long-term adaptability of the home.\n\n\n\nDiscuss the financial\, social\, and environmental benefits of incorporating an ADU into residential projects\, including increased housing flexibility\, rental potential\, and support for multi-generational living.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter:\n\n\n\nAsia Zdziarska\, AIA\, archemy.LA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCoastal CRAN (Custom Residential Architects Network) is a knowledge community of the AIA Long Beach / South Bay \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPONSOR THIS PROGRAM \n\n\n\nSupport an AIA LBSB program that advances our profession and increases visibility for your organization. SUMMARY:COTE Presents: Right-Sizing Residential Plumbing with the Water Demand Calculator
DESCRIPTION:AIA Long Beach / South Bay & Southern California Edison\, a Collaborative Partnership \n\n\n\n\n\n1.0 AIA LU/HSW \n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZOOM LOG-IN WILL BE EMAILED ONE DAY IN ADVANCE OF THE WEBINAR \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nThis session will cover the benefits of using the California Plumbing Code’s Water Demand Calculator (WDC) to size plumbing in homes and apartment buildings. It is a solution that reduces water aging\, delivers hot water faster\, generates significant construction cost savings\, reduces the carbon footprint of the structure\, and subsequently saves on water- and water heating-related utility bills for the entire life of the plumbing system. Effective July 1\, 2024\, the WDC became part of the California Plumbing Code (as Appendix M). Instead of using flow rates and flush volumes from the 1940s\, the WDC will allow plumbing designers to “right-size” the cold and hot water distribution systems in homes and apartment buildings using modern information about flow rates and simultaneous use. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nDifferentiate the conditions that existed for the “default” water supply demand sizing method from the conditions that are incorporated into the Water Demand Calculator (WDC) when selecting a method for sizing peak water demand.\n\n\n\nDescribe the savings in cost\, water\, energy\, and carbon emissions achieved by using the WDC in the plumbing design of a multifamily building\n\n\n\nSummarize the reduced public health and safety risk as well as water quality benefit of plumbing systems designed using the WDC when justifying the use of the WDC.\n\n\n\nLocate instructional resources for using the WDC in the plumbing designs of upcoming projects.\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary Klein\, President of Gary Klein & Associates has been intimately involved in energy efficiency and renewable energy since 1974. Mr. Klein has a passion for hot water: getting into it\, getting out of it and efficiently delivering it to meet customers’ needs. He works to simplify building codes and to get architects and builders to use plumbing systems that\, by their design\, deliver hot water quickly and with minimal waste. \n\n\n\nAfter serving 19 years with the California Energy Commission\, he has provided consulting on sustainability since 2008. Mr. Klein received a BA from Cornell University in 1975 with an Independent Major in Technology and Society with an emphasis on energy conservation and renewable energy.

Now that the baby boomer generation is aging\, we need to consider how this impacts our built environment – an overview of design considerations and lighting which can easily be addressed now to not only allow us to age in place later but also to have others visit us whether they have issues concerning accessibility or aging\, whether just slowing down\, or have a more vigorous disability. This seminar addresses more than just the minimum standards of technical accessible design\, but rather good design practices and implementation overall. We will discuss common areas of concern and issues of aging and our built environment thru photographs of both good and more challenging examples of typical elements. \n\n\n\nSUMMARY \n\n\n\nAn overview of design considerations which can easily be addressed now to not only allow us to age in place later but also have others visit us whether they have issues concerning accessibility or aging. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\n\n\n\nUnderstand how different types of disabilities and aging impact our navigation of the built environment.\n\n\n\nRecognize the impact of lighting and color and how it affects us and our health.\n\n\n\nLearn about different items that can easily be implemented now for aging in place later.\n\n\n\nDistinguish and identify those elements and hazards to avoid that can be more of a challenge as we age.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT INFORMATION: \n\n\n\nThe Zoom log-in link will be sent one day in advance of the program. \n\n\n\nYour Zoom screen name must match the name used to register. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by

Is this due to a lack of knowledge\, or incomplete drawings and specifications\, or sloppy construction\, or is it that the topic has become so complex that it is difficult to synthesize all of the relevant information? And many of the items are indeed extremely technical yet the solutions need to be incorporated at the early non-technical design stages. This presentation will look at many common items in non-compliance often found in new construction and alterations. Learn thru a visual synthesis of photos with pertinent regulation call-outs of numerous existing installations. We will discuss what went wrong\, was missing\, or misunderstood\, in order to recognize Access issues to be on the look-out for and how to better incorporate pertinent information into construction documents and specifications. \n\n\n\nSUMMARY \n\n\n\nBe on the look out for many common items in non-compliance often found in new construction and alterations and become aware of items needing special attention from design thru construction – a visual synthesis of photos with pertinent regulation call-outs for numerous installations. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\n\n\n\nIdentify typical non-complying items before they get built.\n\n\n\nRecognize items to be addressed early for compliant Access later.\n\n\n\nDistinguish those elements requiring more attention during design and construction for compliant installation.\n\n\n\nDiscuss what is required for successful Access implementation.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT INFORMATION: \n\n\n\nThe Zoom log-in link will be sent one day in advance of the program. \n\n\n\nYour Zoom screen name must match the name used to register. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR THE SECOND SESSION\, Accessible Environments As We Age \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by
