Presented by Nick Brown\, President of Build Smart\, this session will cover ADU types and how they impact envelope\, mechanical\, PV\, battery storage/readiness\, and ECC (formerly HERS) requirements—along with updated compliance metrics for new construction ADUs. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nEstablish if an ADU design is considered an alteration\, addition\, or a new residential building per the Energy Code. \n\n\n\nDiscuss the envelope (roof\, walls\, floors\, fenestration) requirements associated with the\n\n\n\nRecognize the renewable energy requirements of ADU type including photovoltaics (PV)\, battery energy storage system\, and battery readiness. \n\n\n\nDetermine mechanical equipment requirements\, including any ECC (formerly known as HERS) verification measure options that provide ADU design flexibility\, and how the new compliance metrics may impact those choices. \n\n\n\n\nPresenter: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNick Brown is President of Build Smart\, an independent energy consultancy specializing in California energy modeling\, energy code\, and building performance that supports builders and architects in designing energy-efficient buildings. \n\n\n\nNick is a Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) for residential and an Associate Energy Analyst (AEA) for nonresidential construction by the California Association of Building Energy Consultants (CABEC). He has spent time working on algorithms for automated driving at General Motors and various renewable deployment methods and technologies from his graduate degree consulting projects at the University of Michigan. \n\n\n\nHe is passionate about mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change to make the world a better place for the next generation. His current focus is on building codes and appliance standards\, with an engineering lens driven by past experience in the automotive sector. \n\n\n\nGrant has dual master’s degrees in business administration and Sustainable Systems from University of Michigan\, and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Berkeley.
