A creative at heart\, she loves understanding “existing conditions” and working with staff from across an organization to imagine and realize transformational change. Starting out her career as an architect and designer with a BArch from Pratt Institute\, Alethea spent almost 20 years managing workplace strategy and corporate headquarters projects for major global brands while working for firms such as STUDIOS Architecture\, Skolnick Architecture\, and Gensler. She holds a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University and is an MBTI Certified Practitioner and certified leadership coach. Born and brought up in the UK\, Alethea lives in Brooklyn with her husband and her 11- and 14-year-old boys. \n\n\n\nMalaika Aaron-Bishop\, Director of Learning & Methodology\, is an experienced and thoughtful strategist and facilitator. She creates space for learning\, while improving levels of engagement and connection between people on teams\, both large and small. Malaika’s work is informed by her adaptability\, insight\, keen observation\, humor\, and an openness for the idiosyncrasies of our shared humanity. While the focus of her work changes with the needs of each organization\, several factors are critical to her approach: a racial justice lens\, an understanding of power and power differentials\, and the ability to engage difficult conversations across lines of difference. Born in Guyana before coming to the US as a child\, Malaika has a background in broadcast television\, anthropology and higher education. She lives in Brooklyn where she is also a community organizer concerned with racial justice\, energy justice\, women’s health & reproductive rights\, health justice\, and criminal justice. SUMMARY:Weekday Online Webinar: As-Built Best Practices - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1.0 AIA LU \n\n\n\nAttendees will have a chance to win a Paris Skyline Architecture Series Lego set! \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nAs-Built Surveying Best Practices Part 2 is a comprehensive course that was developed in response to architects’ direct need to obtain as-built plans prior to beginning their design process. The class is intended to educate the attendee about both parts of the as-built survey process – gathering the field measurements of the structure\, as well as using the data collected to draft or model the final plans needed by the architect. The first part of the course focuses laser scanning\, which is quickly being adopted as the main form of field measuring because of its efficiency and accuracy. The second half of the course explains the second step in creating As-Built plans\, which is to document the existing conditions using the Point Cloud in AutoCAD 2D drafting software and/or various 3D Building Information Modeling software. When attendees complete the course\, they will understand the full process for creating As-Built plans using laser scanning as the main method for gathering field measurements. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nRecognize when and how to use terrestrial laser scanners to gather field measurements.\n\n\n\nKnow when and how to employ mobile scanners to take field measurements.\n\n\n\nUnderstand the role that Point Clouds play in displaying data in a usable form.\n\n\n\nBe familiar with techniques for drafting and modeling As-Built scope items in AutoCAD\, Revit\, and other BIM software.\n\n\n\n\nTHIS PROGRAM WILL BE PRESENTED ON ZOOM. WEBINAR LOG-IN LINK WILL BE INCLUDED IN YOUR CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATION EMAIL FROM EVENTBRITE. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nCameron Slatterbeck \n\n\n\nCameron has diligently served his clients in the Southern California AEC community for over 15 years. With PPM’s headquarters in Long Beach\, he has been instrumental in expanding our services across the region\, while leading an ever-growing team of Surveyors and Project Managers to support the hundreds of projects he has managed. When you work with Cameron\, you can expect a true partner on your project. He is committed to fulfilling PPM’s Worry-Free Promise – to deliver your As-Built Plans with accuracy\, timeliness\, and strong communication. In his spare time\, Cameron enjoys country music concerts\, LA Kings games\, and traveling with his wife and their newborn daughter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Platinum Level sponsor

SUMMARY:Shuttle Stack Tour: Samuel Oschin Air and Space Gallery\, California Science Center
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUse your AIA ID# to reveal hidden ticket \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1.5 LU/HSW \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nThe 180\,000sf Samuel Oschin Air and Space Gallery is under construction in Exposition Park. When completed it will house over 150 exhibits celebrating the history of air and space travel\, most notably the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Endeavour\, and the supporting Shuttle Stack components\, are all authentic and will be displayed in a vertical\, launch-ready position\, as it sat at the Kennedy Space Center before launching out of earth’s atmosphere.  Tour led by the project Structural Engineer focusing on engineering solutions to some of this unique projects’ challenges. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nBase isolation of Shuttle stack: Attendees will learn about seismic base isolation\, specifically triple-friction pendulum isolators\, and how they were necessary to lower the forces on the Shuttle Stack exhibit from earthquakes to less than the forces on the Stack when it was launched from earth’s surface and out of the atmosphere.\n\n\n\nShuttle Hall Enclosure: Attendees will learn about the high performance\, large volume structure enclosing the Shuttle Stack and how it is being constructed around the Shuttle Stack exhibit and learn about the optimization studies that established efficient geometry to minimize volume/area and lower the cost of the enclosure.\n\n\n\nDesign and Engineering: Attendees will hear how the Owner\, Architect and Engineers worked together to design the Gallery Building exhibit space for flexibility.\n\n\n\nDesign and Engineering: Attendees will learn about the engineering design and construction of the 160’ tall\, cantilevered steel braced frame Gantry for the occupied exhibit with cantilevered viewing platforms to observe the Shuttle at different heights.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: \n\n\n\nPPE (hard hat\, boots\, reflective vest\, eye protection) is required \n\n\n\nParking is not provided: Parking is available at the Science Center for a fee of $20\, street metered parking\, or take the Metro Line to Exposition Park (recommended) \n\n\n\nLearn more about the Shuttle Stack and the California Science Center \n\n\n\nRead about the Endeavor’s final journey \n\n\n\nThank you to ARUP for providing this tour to our members!
