DESCRIPTION:AIA Long Beach / South Bay & Southern California Edison\, a Collaborative Partnership \n\n\n\n\n\n1.0 LU/HSW/ZNCD  \n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nJuly 2024 brings new CALGreen requirements for commercial buildings over 100\,000 square feet and school buildings over 50\,000 square feet to show embodied carbon savings.  This short one-hour session will cover these new requirements\, as well as explain the concepts\, why embodied carbon matters\, how to measure and reduce embodied carbon\, and how to show compliance with the new CALGreen requirements via Prescriptive and Performance pathways.  \n\n\n\nLearning objectives: \n\n\n\n\nDifferentiate between embodied carbon and operational carbon.\n\n\n\nDescribe the importance of managing embodied carbon in achieving California’s climate goals.\n\n\n\nExplain how to measure and reduce embodied carbon and support design decisions with the most significant impact.  \n\n\n\nIdentify CALGreen requirements on embodied carbon that will take effect July 1\, 2024.\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGina Rodda is currently the Owner of Gabel Energy out of Castro Valley\, California\, and has been in the energy modeling field since 1991. She is an energy analyst performing a wide range of responsibilities in both residential and nonresidential construction pertaining to compliance standards and energy modeling within the United States\, while specializing in California Building Code. California local ordinances (or Reach codes) supporting electrification and electric preferred for multifamily\, hotel/motel and nonresidential buildings dictates much of the work Gabel Energy provides in Northern California in which Gabel Energy has been an active leader in heat pump mechanical equipment design choices as supported by the Energy Code and compliance software modeling. \n\n\n\nGina has worked with Energy Code Ace as a subject matter expert developing and supporting trainings\, resources and tools on the Residential and Nonresidential Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards for building department staff\, energy consultants\, engineers\, contractors and architects. \n\n\n\nGina also works as a respected subject matter expert informing the statewide code development process since the 2013 Building Code cycle. \n\n\n\nGina’s Certifications: \n\n\n\n\nResidential and Nonresidential Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) via CABEC\n\n\n\nLEED Accredited Professional (AP) via USGBC\n\n\n\nEducation: Bachelor of Arts from University of the Pacific (UOP) graduated 1989

Our camp curriculum will include drawing and model building workshops & activities\, a design project\, field trips\, and group presentations. \n\n\n\n60% of our campers are inner-city youth with very limited access to resources like transportation\, the internet and personal laptops. Marco has had the opportunity to speak at various conferences\, seminars\, and webinars as a subject matter expert in developing high-functioning learning environments. \n\n\n\nMarco has been fortunate to have been taught and mentored by some truly exceptional people throughout the industry. One of his primary goals in life is to invest what he has learned into the lives of others. \n\n\n\nMarco is a member of the American Institute of Architects\, Coalition for Adequate School Housing\, Community College Facilities Coalition\, LEED Accredited\, and is currently working on obtaining certification with the Design Build Institute of America. Financial incentives are available to support this transition from utility programs as well as through State\, Federal\, and local government tax credits and rebates. This course will outline key funding available through the Inflation Reduction Act and other programs that can help your projects meet their budgetary and decarbonization objectives and give your business an advantage in the market. You’ll also access resources to help overcome common misconceptions about electrification\, provide more value to your clients\, and improve your community impact.  \n\n\n\nLearning objectives: \n\n\n\n\nUnderstand how State\, Federal\, and utility incentive programs apply to your projects and can support Zero Net Carbon Design objectives.\n\n\n\nApply best practices regarding code compliance and qualification for incentive programs. \n\n\n\nEffectively communicate the value of electric appliances and equipment\, such as heat pumps and induction cooktops.  \n\n\n\nBetter position your business for success with all-electric projects.\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNick Brown\, Allied member of the AIA LBSB\, is President of Build Smart\, an independent energy consultancy specializing in California energy modeling\, energy code\, and building performance that supports builders and architects in designing energy-efficient buildings.  Nick is a Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) for residential and an Associate Energy Analyst (AEA) for nonresidential construction by the California Association of Building Energy Consultants (CABEC).  He is a Subject Matter Expert on the Energy Code Ace statewide education team and teaches classes for Southern California Edison on Net Zero Design\, All-electric Homes\, Heat Pumps\, and Selling Clean Energy Homes.  As part of a CalSEED team\, Nick is currently researching phase change material applications in HVAC systems.  Nick was elected to the Board of Directors of CABEC beginning in 2018.  He holds a BA in Economics from Princeton University and an MBA in Manufacturing from the University of Michigan.  He remodeled his own home in 2014 in a deep energy retrofit and has written and presented extensively on Net Zero buildings\, high-performance walls\, and energy efficient building.  Prior to starting Build Smart\, he served as President of Merlex Stucco for 15 years\, a $15 million Southern California stucco manufacturer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Shipman manages Franklin Energy’s Workforce Education & Energy Codes Services nationally. An award-winning thought leader\, innovator and instructor\, John specializes in network collaboration and equity-based program development. John pioneered green real estate innovation & practices\, supporting California Public Utilities Commission’s clean energy efforts and is a recipient of the coveted EverGreen Award from the National Association of Realtors. John is a licensed General Building Contractor and was one of the first Certified HERS Building Performance Contractors in the State of California. John holds a B.A. in Psychology from UCLA and a Master of Science in Environmental Studies with a focus on Human Behavior\, Society and the Environment from California State University\, Fullerton.
