SUMMARY:Design Awards Submission Support: Common Application - 2025 Update
DESCRIPTION:1.0 AIA LU \n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Common Application is based on the AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence which seeks to inform progress toward a zero-carbon\, equitable\, resilient\, and healthy built environment. These are to be thoughtfully considered by designer and client at the initiation of every project and incorporated into the work as appropriate to the project scope. The Framework is intended to be accessible and relevant for every architect\, every client\, and every project\, regardless of size\, typology\, or aspiration. \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an enlightening webinar where we delve into the Common Application\, a vital tool in the Design Awards process adopted by AIA Chapters nationwide. Our session will demystify the Common App and focus on common pitfalls and mistakes encountered by submitters. Additionally\, the presenters will cover the new 2025 updates. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a seasoned participant or new to the process\, our webinar aims to equip you with the knowledge and insights necessary to navigate the Common App effectively. From understanding its structure to optimizing your submissions\, our panel of experts is here to assist. Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your understanding and elevate your submissions for Design Awards. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nWalk through AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence and its importance within all project types.\n\n\n\nExplore the Common Application and answer questions on how to correctly pull out and calculate energy data.\n\n\n\nCompare different categories of buildings\, how they are weighed in the technical review process and how submitters can address Framework areas their projects do not excel in.\n\n\n\nAnalyze strategies that correctly and efficiently pull data on a project and complete the Common Application without it heavily affecting firm time.\n\n\n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\nKatie Ackerly\, AIA\, LEED AP\, CPHC\, is Principal and Sustainable Design Director at David Baker Architects\, a firm known for elevating the design of multi-family housing. Katie holds a Master of Architecture and a Masters degree in Building Science from UC Berkeley\, and has taught and conducted research related to energy and environmental design. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDave Intner\, AIA\, with Southern California Edison’s Building Electrification and Codes & Standards team\, is a Licensed Architect\, AIA\, LEED AP and Certified Energy Manager.  A graduate of Cal Poly SLO\, Dave provides education and outreach supporting Building Decarbonization and Energy Code Compliance Improvement. Dave has 28 years of professional experience split between architectural practice and utility program delivery. \n\n\n\n\nModerator: \n\n\n\n\nKeith Hempel\, FAIA\, President and Chief Design Officer at LPA\, is an active national leader on energy performance and decarbonization\, working to develop best practices across the industry for developing higher performing buildings. He serves on the AIA’s National 2030 Commitment Working Group\, where he helps other firms meet their sustainability targets. He is also a member of the AIA National Large Firm Roundtable Sustainability Working Group\, which is focused on sharing knowledge and developing resources for firms across the U.S. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThank you to our program sponsor! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicole McAfee – Zurn Elkay Specification Business Development Manager – California (820) 206-8600 \n\n\n\nSusan Sullivan – Zurn Elkay Product Manager – Spec Share – California (415) 595-2414 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEARN ABOUT THE AIA LBSB’S 2025 DESIGN AWARDS PROGRAM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPONSOR THIS PROGRAM \n\n\n\nSupport an AIA LBSB program that advances our profession and increases visibility for your organization. Contact us to learn how.

SUMMARY:COTE Presents: Right-Sizing Residential Plumbing with the Water Demand Calculator
DESCRIPTION:AIA Long Beach / South Bay & Southern California Edison\, a Collaborative Partnership \n\n\n\n\n\n1.0 AIA LU/HSW \n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZOOM LOG-IN WILL BE EMAILED ONE DAY IN ADVANCE OF THE WEBINAR \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nThis session will cover the benefits of using the California Plumbing Code’s Water Demand Calculator (WDC) to size plumbing in homes and apartment buildings. It is a solution that reduces water aging\, delivers hot water faster\, generates significant construction cost savings\, reduces the carbon footprint of the structure\, and subsequently saves on water- and water heating-related utility bills for the entire life of the plumbing system. Effective July 1\, 2024\, the WDC became part of the California Plumbing Code (as Appendix M). Instead of using flow rates and flush volumes from the 1940s\, the WDC will allow plumbing designers to “right-size” the cold and hot water distribution systems in homes and apartment buildings using modern information about flow rates and simultaneous use. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nDifferentiate the conditions that existed for the “default” water supply demand sizing method from the conditions that are incorporated into the Water Demand Calculator (WDC) when selecting a method for sizing peak water demand.\n\n\n\nDescribe the savings in cost\, water\, energy\, and carbon emissions achieved by using the WDC in the plumbing design of a multifamily building\n\n\n\nSummarize the reduced public health and safety risk as well as water quality benefit of plumbing systems designed using the WDC when justifying the use of the WDC.\n\n\n\nLocate instructional resources for using the WDC in the plumbing designs of upcoming projects.\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary Klein\, President of Gary Klein & Associates has been intimately involved in energy efficiency and renewable energy since 1974. Mr. Klein has a passion for hot water: getting into it\, getting out of it and efficiently delivering it to meet customers’ needs. He works to simplify building codes and to get architects and builders to use plumbing systems that\, by their design\, deliver hot water quickly and with minimal waste. \n\n\n\nAfter serving 19 years with the California Energy Commission\, he has provided consulting on sustainability since 2008. Mr. Klein received a BA from Cornell University in 1975 with an Independent Major in Technology and Society with an emphasis on energy conservation and renewable energy.
