DESCRIPTION:1.5 LU|HSW \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTOUR DETAILS\n\n\n\n“Homes are the cornerstone of a thriving and just society.” \n\n\n\nAIA Los Angeles & AIA Long Beach/South Bay are very pleased to introduce our communities to Century Villages at Cabrillo (CVC): an inspiring and beautifully planned community designed to provide quality affordable housing and onsite supportive services. \n\n\n\nLocated in Long Beach\, CA\, Century Villages at Cabrillo (CVC) sits on 27 acres and is home to over 2\,000 residents on any given night\, including veterans\, families\, and individuals with special needs. CVC offers both permanent and transitional housing\, complemented by a network of services and amenities with a range of collaborators. \n\n\n\nEstablished in 1997\, CVC transformed a former Naval housing base near the Port of Long Beach into a thriving community. By bringing together service providers\, many of whom operate directly onsite\, CVC leverages a collective-impact approach to break the cycle of homelessness for its residents. (Collective impact is a framework where organizations from different sectors work together towards a common goal.) Nearly every resident in permanent housing at CVC maintained their housing after one year—a testament to its success. \n\n\n\nAs the backbone organization\, CVC serves as the steward\, manager\, and coordinator of the Villages community. CVC is a nonprofit affiliate of Century Housing\, a group dedicated to financing\, developing\, and managing quality affordable housing across California. \n\n\n\nClick here to learn more about Century Villages at Cabrillo. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTOUR MEETING SPOT\n\n\n\nMeet in front of the property office by the flags at the intersection of Williams Street and River Avenue. \n\n\n\nClick here to see and download the PDF for Driving Directions & the Campus Map. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPARKING\n\n\n\nParking is available along San Gabriel Avenue\, Williams Street\, and Willard Street\, and any spot on campus like carports\, garages\, etc.\, that aren’t marked as no parking. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTOUR HOSTS\n\n\n\nRichard Prantis\, AIA\, LEED AP – Founding Principal\, The Architects Collective (TAC) \n\n\n\nKimberly Wee – Executive Director\, Century Villages at Cabrillo (CVC) \n\n\n\nOscar Alvarado – Senior Vice President of Housing Development\, Century Affordable Development\, Inc.

SUMMARY:COTE Presents: 2025 Code Breaker — Nonresidential\, Hotel/Motel and Multifamily Envelope and CALGreen Embodied Carbon
DESCRIPTION:AIA Long Beach / South Bay & Southern California Edison\, a Collaborative Partnership \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1.5 LU/HSW (Pending) – This course qualifies toward California’s Zero Net Carbon Design (ZNCD) continuing education requirements. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZOOM LOG-IN WILL BE EMAILED TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE OF THE WEBINAR. \n\n\n\nDescription: \n\n\n\nThe 2025 California Energy Code (Title 24\, Part 6) introduces important updates to building envelope requirements for nonresidential\, hotel/motel\, and multifamily projects across all scopes of work\, including new construction\, additions\, and alterations. This course provides a comprehensive overview of these changes\, focusing on envelope components such as roofs\, walls\, floors\, fenestration\, and doors\, and how they impact design and compliance. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, the session explores the embodied carbon requirements introduced in Title 24\, Part 11 (CALGreen)\, highlighting their role in advancing California’s climate goals and supporting Zero Net Carbon Design (ZNCD) strategies. Attendees will gain practical insight into how to integrate energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures into project design and documentation. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives: \n\n\n\n\nIdentify the applicable sections of the 2025 California Energy Code (Title 24\, Part 6) for nonresidential\, hotel/motel\, and multifamily building types.\n\n\n\nExplain updated building envelope requirements—including roofs\, walls\, floors\, fenestration\, and doors—and how they apply across different project scopes.\n\n\n\nDifferentiate between Energy Code requirements for new construction versus alterations and additions.\n\n\n\nDescribe the role of embodied carbon in achieving California’s climate goals and advancing Zero Net Carbon Design (ZNCD).\n\n\n\nApply strategies to measure and reduce embodied carbon in accordance with Title 24\, Part 11 (CALGreen)\, supporting more informed and impactful design decisions.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\nGina Griffiths RoddaOwner\, Gabel Energy Gina Griffiths Rodda is currently the Owner of Gabel Energy out of Castro Valley\, California\, and has been in the energy modeling field since 1991. She is an energy analyst performing a wide range of responsibilities in both residential and nonresidential construction pertaining to compliance standards and energy modeling within the United States\, while specializing in California Building Code. California local ordinances (or Reach codes) supporting electrification and electric preferred for multifamily\, hotel/motel and nonresidential buildings dictates much of the work Gabel Energy provides in Northern California in which Gabel Energy has been an active leader in heat pump mechanical equipment design choices as supported by the Energy Code and compliance software modeling.Gina has worked with Energy Code Ace as a subject matter expert developing and supporting trainings\, resources and tools on the Residential and Nonresidential Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards for building department staff\, energy consultants\, engineers\, contractors and architects.Gina also works as a respected subject matter expert informing the statewide code development process since the 2013 Building Code cycle.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDave Intner\, AIA\, CEM\, LEED APSenior Advisor | Building Decarbonization and Energy Codes & Standards at SCE Dave Intner is a Licensed Architect\, LEED AP\, and Certified Energy Manager with Southern California Edison’s Codes & Standards team.  A graduate of Cal Poly SLO\, Dave provides education and outreach supporting Building Decarbonization and Energy Code Compliance Improvement. He leads several initiatives focusing on zero net carbon design and energy codes\, including case study books showcasing nonresidential and multifamily Zero Net Carbon design projects. Other roles at SCE have included managing the field engineering group and providing direct design and incentive support to high-performing LEED and net-zero buildings in the Savings by Design Program.Prior to SCE\, Dave practiced architecture for 15 years on buildings of just about every type including custom residential\, affordable housing\, university buildings\, and cultural facilities. A LEED Accredited Professional for over 20 years\, Dave also guided several early high-performance projects through the full LEED certification process.Dave is the current Vice Chair of the AIA California Climate Action Committee\, is a board member of CABEC (the California Building Energy Consultants)\, a past board member of USGBC Los Angeles and has served on the LEED Energy and Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group (EA-TAG). He is also a Past President of the AIA Ventura County.
