This award recognizes a distinguished contribution to the profession and communities over the entire career of an individual or firm. The individual can be affiliated with the College of Fellows, but it is not mandatory. This individual or firm’s contribution should include impacting the built environment, positive values of the profession, beautifying the cities within our chapter area, and enhancing the theory and practice of architecture.
Bob Murrin, FAIA
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Bob Murrin, FAIA, LEED AP, is a distinguished architect whose 45-year career was dedicated to AC Martin, a renowned Los Angeles-based firm. As a Principal and leader of the firm’s Education Planning and Design Studio, Bob specialized in the design of innovative and award-winning educational facilities across California. His portfolio includes major projects at USC, CSU campuses, UC Irvine, Chapman University, and various community colleges, with a strong emphasis on thoughtful, sustainable, and student-centered design.
Professionally, Bob has been an engaged and respected member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), elected to the AIA College of Fellows in 2014—one of the organization’s highest honors. He is also a LEED Accredited Professional and an active participant in the Society of College and University Planners (SCUP), where he frequently shared his insights as a speaker at national and international conferences.
In addition to his architectural work, Bob has been deeply involved in civic and professional service. He served on the AIA California Board of Directors and Executive Committee, championing climate action, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Locally, he has held numerous leadership roles with the AIA Long Beach/South Bay Chapter, including President in 2015, the YMCA of Greater Long Beach, and educational advisory committees. His dedication earned him the John S. Boyles Fellowship in 2018 for service to the profession.
In retirement, Bob has embraced his passion for art through plein air painting and active involvement in the local arts community. Recognized as the Huntington Beach Art League’s 2023 Artist of the Year, his work has been featured in several juried exhibitions. A Long Beach native, Bob continues to contribute to his community while enjoying life with his wife Laurie, their two children, and four grandsons.
